How do you deal with fleas?

For some reason flea medicines have not been working on our animals anymore. When I received some diatomaceous earth for my slug experiment, I tried it for the manufacturer's original purpose which was to get rid of fleas. Unfortunately it didn't work. My husband tried a flea collar, but it was stinky and actually appeared to make the problem worse.

What do you use to get rid of fleas?

Where do you have fleas?

On our dogs and cats. We tore our carpet out so they aren't just living in the house anymore.

I've noticed that the flea medicines don't work also. Didn't you recommend Brewer's Yeast? I control them on Joey by using the flea shampoos but I don't like doing it. Too many chemicals and the fragrance, it's gotta be especially bad for dogs with their sensitive noses.

Yes, I had read somewhere that you can sprinkle brewers yeast into their fur and that it repels fleas. It seemed to work once before but hasn't this time. Maybe I should try it again.

We had similar problems here with our dog. Thats when I found out flea medications don't work. I ended up bathing him frequently and blow drying his fur. I treated the fleas the same way I treated the house the time one of my children brought lice home. I washed blankets, etc that the pets lay on- vaccuumed anywhere they lay- even floors, the fleas can hide in the cracks, crevices- you would be surprised. empty your bag right away and get it out of the house. I also had them come and spray the yard(the part the dog went in) for fleas (I'm really not sure that helped or not).but eventually- the problem went away...I just had to keep at the vaccuuming and washing for awhile.

Amy Dear, I find that sometimes the meds work and sometimes they don't. We just keep vacuuming and cleaning up. I think the brewer's yeast is something I should try too.

I'm curious about your doctor's appointment today...
